Her Excellency Shiuneen Rasheed

High Commissioner


Shiuneen Rasheed is a career foreign service officer. She is currently the High Commissioner-designate of the Republic of Maldives to People’s Republic of Bangladesh. She was previously the Joint Secretary of Europe, Americas and Oceania Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Maldives. She first started work at the Department in 2015, first, as Assistant Director, and Director and Director-General. As head of the Department, she has been instrumental in crafting and directing Maldives policy on relationships with European countries, the EU, the USA and North, Central and South American countries.

 

Shiuneen started her professional career at the President’s Office, as a personnel officer, where she was tasked with activities related to the human resources management of the Government at the Public Service Division – the precursor to the now independent Civil Service Commission. She joined the Foreign Service in August 2010, where she served as a Senior Desk Officer at the Legal and Human Rights Division. Most notably, Shiuneen worked on the Maldives UPR submission, the compilation of the Common Core Document, Treaty Reporting, and Maldives engagement on human rights issues, and the UN Human Rights Council. She also worked briefly at the South Asia Division.

 

Throughout her tenure in the Maldives Foreign Service, Shiuneen was also posted as the First Secretary at the Permanent Mission of the Maldives to the United Nations Office in Geneva in April 2014. At Geneva, Shiuneen delivered Maldives positions on human rights, and guided and executed Maldives engagement as a member of the UN Human Rights Council.

 

Shiuneen has a Bachelor of Human Sciences in Political Sciences from the International Islamic University in Malaysia in 2010, and a Master of Management in Public Policy from Peking University in China in 2012. She is interested in human rights, especially anti-torture, prison reform and transitional justice, and counter terrorism issues. She also enjoys learning and following astrophysics.

 

Shiuneen is married with a son.
